7 Essential travel tips for visiting Halkidiki, Greece

Planning a trip to Halkidiki? We’re locals — and we’ve welcomed guests from all over the world. So if you’re visiting Halkidiki for the first time, here are a few travel tips that can make your stay smoother, safer, and even more enjoyable.

Whether you’re staying with us in Pefkochori or Chanioti, these little insights come straight from experience.

Getting here: Thessaloniki Airport is your best option

The closest airport to Halkidiki is Thessaloniki (SKG). It’s about 1.5 hours by car to the Kassandra peninsula. We recommend renting a car at the airport for the most flexible travel — especially if you plan to explore nearby villages and beaches.

Yes, You’ll need cash

While most places accept cards, some smaller beach bars, bakeries, and local stores still prefer cash. It’s always a good idea to carry some euros with you — especially in more rural areas.

Timing Is everything

If you love the buzz of summer, July and August are perfect, but be prepared for more crowds.
For a quieter experience, late May, June, and September offer fewer tourists, and a more relaxed vibe.

Don’t skip the local markets

Local farmers’ markets (called laiki) happen weekly in most towns. Fresh fruits, olives, cheeses, and homemade products await, and they’re a great way to experience the real Greek lifestyle.

Ask us when and where the market is happening while you’re here!

Sun protection is a must

The Greek sun is strong even on cloudy days. Make sure to bring (and use) high-SPF sunscreen, hats, and light clothing.

Shade isn’t always guaranteed at the beach, so a small umbrella in your car can come in handy.

Reserve beach sunbeds early

During peak season, popular beach bars fill up quickly. If you want a front-row sunbed, it’s smart to reserve one the day before especially on weekends.

Or, for a more peaceful vibe, we’ll gladly point you to quieter beaches nearby.

Be open to slow moments

Greece isn’t about rushing. Meals last longer. People take time to chat. The sea invites you to pause. Let yourself slow down, you’re on holiday. The less you rush, the more you’ll feel the magic of Halkidiki.
